Pastor James David Manning remains steadfast about his rants against gays and transgender people. In January, a court ordered the church to sell its assets at a foreclosure auction to repay more than $1 million in debt. The church has received a temporary stay until an April 21 hearing. The Ali Forney Center is preparing a financial package to buy the building. After nearly sixty years, the church will close its doors.
Manning, the controversial African-American Harlem preacher is known for his anti-gay diatribes. In 1957, Pastor Millard Alexander Stanley formed the Bethelite Community Baptist Church. Manning replaced Pastor Stanley as senior pastor in 1981. Before Manning’s “conversion” to Christianity, he had a rough childhood. He grew up in the south and hated Caucasians. He spent time in prison for burglary. He eventually turned from crime and earned his Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 1985.
Manning changed the name to ATLAH Worldwide Missionary Church, and preached. The church also has a studio where Manning delivers the Manning Report. Manning is a huge Donald Trump supporter. He has posted several comments on Twitter showing his support.
