UK couple finds 'whale vomit' that could be worth thousands

On Friday, a Fox News affiliate reported that Gary and Angela Williams of the UK have potentially found whale ambergris (whale vomit) on the beach. Ambergris resembles a mutated soccer ball and smells like a combination of roadkill and farm manure. Ambergris goes for big bucks because it’s so rare. It is used in perfumes, aphrodisiacs, and medicinal purposes.

However, Christopher Kemp, the author of a book about whale ambergris says ambergris is whale poop, not vomit. He said it can be difficult to tell whether it is real or just fool’s gold. Testing can determine its authenticity. People consistently find items they think are ambergris, but it usually turns out to be anything but ambergris. Before anyone gets too excited and decides to hunt ambergris, America and Australia have outlawed selling it.
