Forget Batman and Iron Man, Fat Princess is here to save you

She's fat, hungry, and ready to run! It’s Fat Princess! Who is this woman? She is Sony’s new rising star. Fat Princess made her debut at last week’s E3 expo.

Playstation's website provides the mission:

Fat Princess pits two hordes of players against each other. The goal is to rescue the princess from the enemy dungeon. The problem is your opponent keeps stuffing the princess with goodies making her so fat, she can barely be carried across the battlezone.

-->The game has touched off a firestorm of controversy. I have seen the word "fat bashing" in a blog description. Feminist gamer's "Mighty Ponygirl" offered an alternate suggestion.
"Instead of running out into the forest to find cake to fatten up the princess with, why not go out and find gold (which is a lot heavier than cake) to stuff into a treasure chest. The more gold in the chest, the heavier it would be, and the harder it would be to carry." She then adds "Oh, but that's not as "cute" as cake and fat chicks. Right."

James Green, Fat Princess' lead art director let offended gamers know that Fat Princess was actually designed by a woman. Like everything else, this game will offend someone. This time, instead of offending someone’s political views or religion, it’s supposedly a jab at overweight people. With obesity becoming a problem and America being labeled the world’s fattest country, it’s more shocking that Fat Princess didn’t arrive earlier.

Even if you aren’t offended by an overweight heroine, there are still other games out there which are just as offensive. How about video games where you can beat someone to death with a baseball bat or kill a prostitute? I am not seeing anyone protest killing or maiming another person.

Maybe being overweight is a topic closer to home for many of us. I admit that I could shed a few pounds but I am not offended by a cake eating cartoon heroine. Just think, if Fat Princess becomes a success, we may eventually see her making her debut in a movie, cartoon, or on a lunchbox.
