The police department in Redondo Beach, California confirmed that Joanie Marie Laurer known as Chyna, 45, died on Wednesday. CNN reported that a concerned friend called authorities after finding Laurer unresponsive. Police found nothing suggesting foul play, but they found prescription bottles. She had taken medication for anxiety and insomnia.
Early speculation is that she died of an overdose. For many years, Laurer had battled drug and alcohol issues. As “Chyna,” Laurer became one of the most successful women wrestlers in WWE history. Born in Rochester, New York, her childhood included domestic violence and alcoholism.
She escaped her troubled home life by excelling in weight training and school. Additionally, she graduated from the University of Tampa with a 3.9 GPA and spoke Spanish, French, and German.
