I have a new found respect for anyone who writes a book. I didn't realize it could be so challenging. Often, when we read a book, we rarely consider the time or effort an author puts into it. We just read it and then return it to the library or give it away. After writing a book, the next challenge is to find a publisher willing to print it.
I have read many different books on publishing. There are many different options. First, I considered Publish America. I sent them an email with my synopsis. After reading various blogs and consumer websites about them, I decided to pursue another route.
Second, there is Vanity Publishing which basically means you can pay someone to print your book. This has worked for some authors because they can avoid the process of getting rejected and possibly get their book printed rather quickly. Once an author pays for a package, it's up to them to promote their own book.
I didn't want to go this route either because I don't have the financial resources to publish my own book. I also want to avoid the stigma that goes with Vanity Publishing. The belief is that their books aren’t written well and they have little editing, if any. Additionally, most self-published books will never see a bookstore shelf or get mentioned by Oprah.
But at least the author can say they are in print for whatever that's worth. It all depends on your goal. If you write just to say you’re published, then self-publishing is a good path. Finally, I want to write something that will be read and potentially end up in a bookstore. I am ready to go through the painstaking process other writers go through; namely, submitting manuscripts to small presses on my own or trying to find a literary agent.
I have contacted two small presses already. One said they don't have time to review my manuscript because they are too backed up. Another one read my review and said it wasn’t a fit with what they publish. Rejection is one of the hardest parts of the publishing business. Its like selling vacuums door to door. Unfortunately, it's a necessary evil that all successful authors have experienced. I am looking forward to going through the process in an effort to find my first publisher.
I just need to find someone willing to be objective and take a chance on a new author. I will post updates about my journey to becoming a published author. I may even be able to offer some insight once I find a publisher.
Stay tuned!
