Crime TV

Are you a "whodunnit" murder mystery junkie? For unknown reasons, I am fascinated by these programs; my wife calls them "ghoul shows." I enjoy watching programs about police detectives who solve murders committed by fools who need to be in prison.

Recently, I saw a story about a former principal who murdered his entire family. While in court, he seemed confident that he would get away with his crime. It was interesting to see the smirk leave his face after the jury found him guilty. To his dismay, he was done in by a combination of good detective work and some insects caught in his radiator.

It doesn't seem to matter how careful a killer attempts to be, they always leave evidence behind that connects them to their heinous crime.

Killers always discount the tenacity of some hard-nosed gumshoe and modern science. Whether it is hair, skin underneath the victim’s fingernails or a cell phone bill, most criminals can't cover all of their tracks.

The trick to solving a murder is for the detectives to locate enough evidence to secure a conviction.

Criminals forget that the police have eternity to solve a murder because there is no statute of limitations for killing someone.

What is really intriguing is the ignorance and boldness of most killers. When I watch these programs, I can't believe the killer thinks he or she can get away with their crime--especially after they leave DNA evidence everywhere. They never consider the consequences of their ignorance. They forget that when they get caught, they will go to prison and forfeit their freedom.

Before the popularity of reality crime programs, the networks brought us Law and Order, NYPD Blue, and the entire CSI franchise.

This tells me that shows about murder must be selling advertising and it’s what people want to watch. If it's a good murder mystery, many of us will keep on watching…me included.
