A Christmas beyond the grave

Who says the spirit of Christmas can't reach out past the grave? The Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel recently published a special Christmas story about love after death.

Gail Cotter was preparing to spend Christmas without Gary Cotter, her husband of 37 years. Gary, 66, had lost his battle with cancer on December 17, 2007. Gail was at his side holding his hand.

He lived for the holiday season as he enjoyed trimming the Christmas tree and hanging up Christmas cards. She knew celebrating Christmas would be hard without Gary. She would have to trim the tree and celebrate the holiday season without him.

Gary and Gail spent many shopping trips together at the local Big Lots. Their daughter, Michelle Olszewski, thought a trip to Big Lots would cheer up her mother.

While looking for toys for her grandchildren, Gail came across an interesting draw and erase doodle board located on a stack of other toys. Gail and her daughter weren’t prepared for the message written on the doodle board.

“I love you Gail.”

Gail and her daughter were shocked and speechless because neither of them had written the message. Michelle told her mother she had heard the song “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” many times for the past several days. Had Gary somehow made his way home for Christmas? Michelle said she could feel her father's warm presence this Christmas season.

Gail purchased the toy as a reminder of her husband’s love as it gave her something she needed for Christmas…the memory of Gary's love.
