The haunting

William Montell, author of Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky claims Kentucky has many ghosts and wandering spirits.

Some readers may find the book far-fetched. But my wife and I know otherwise. In 1997, I accepted a job transfer to Lexington, Kentucky. After arriving in Lexington, we settled into an older townhouse near my office.

At first, life seemed normal, but it didn’t remain peaceful for long. One early morning, my wife said she heard someone running upstairs. The problem was that no one was upstairs. She called me to discuss the strange sounds.

I reassured her that the unexplained sounds were probably the wind. This became the first of several unusual incidents during our stay at the townhouse.

Days later, she heard our youngest son talking to someone. She entered his room to investigate. He was talking, but no one else was in the room. She had no explanation.

She then got a part-time job at a local restaurant. While working evenings, I cared for our sons. One night while watching television, I heard someone running upstairs. At first, I thought it was my imagination; but, my older son also heard the strange running sounds. I investigated and found nothing.

I later shared the mysterious running sounds. We had no logical explanation. One night after getting home from my job, my wife was upset. She told me about a strange occurrence in the bathroom.

She had placed a swan soap dish on the commode before taking a shower. After her shower, the soap dish mysteriously fell onto the floor. It appeared as if someone had moved the soap dish. It was too heavy to have fallen on its own.

My wife stopped taking afternoon naps because she felt an eerie presence whenever she slept. But when she awoke, no one was there. Fearful of the old townhouse, she wanted to move immediately. I remained doubtful until I experienced my own meeting with the mysterious entity.

One night after going to bed, I heard loud footsteps in the hallway. The footsteps came from my older son’s bedroom. I called out to him but he didn’t respond. I heard a sound similar to wind chimes and shuffling carpet sounds. The entity entered my bedroom.

I could feel its presence at the end of my bed.

I pinched myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. I became too paralyzed to move. I stared at my alarm clock and watched the minutes tick away until daylight.

I didn't tell my wife about the incident for several days because I didn't want her to think I was crazy. After nearly nine months of unexplainable events, I quit my job and we moved to Cincinnati, Ohio.
