Fox News has reported that two police departments are disputing who owns a dead mobster’s Colt Thompson submachine gun (Tommy gun). During the Depression, the notorious John Dillinger used the stolen Tommy gun during his crime spree. According to the FBI website, John Herbert Dillinger, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1903. His spree lasted from September 1933 until his violent death.
Dillinger and his gang robbed banks, killed ten men, wounded seven, and staged three jail breaks. One victim was a law enforcement officer. The FBI finally caught up with Dillinger and shot him to death on July 22, 1934. He is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Although Dillinger died more than 80 years ago, historians and residents of Indianapolis still talk about the well-known gangster. In 1934, Tucson authorities confiscated Dillinger’s Tommy gun, where it remains today.
