Tori Spelling is not Donna Martin

I just read actress Tori Spelling’s biography titled “sTORI telling.” I was at the library and saw it on a shelf with other new releases. Before reading her book, I only knew her as Aaron Spelling’s daughter and wouldn’t have known much else about her.

I have always enjoyed reading biographies about people with interesting lives. Most of us work at a job we hate, struggle to pay bills, and raise our children to be responsible adults…not exactly New York Times best-selling material. I assumed the daughter of TV mogul Aaron Spelling would definitely have an interesting life.

To my surprise, it was an interesting story about very intimate details of Spelling’s life and her thoughts on love, religion, marriage, trust, and lifelong friendships. The book also goes into great detail about her strained relationship with her mother and the loss of her beloved father.

Readers will also appreciate her honesty about her claim to fame. She restates what we already know; she wouldn’t be famous had she not been the daughter of Aaron Spelling.

With the exception of nearly getting her nose bitten off by her pet bird and meeting with a Voodoo priestess, she has experienced the same trials and tribulations many of us have endured at some point in our lives.

She shares the sordid details of her mismanagement of money and an abusive boyfriend who gambled away thousands of her dollars. She also dealt with childhood insecurities about her physical appearance started by her mother’s criticism of her nose.

Furthermore, Spelling goes into great detail about her loving relationship with her current husband, Dean McDermott.

The details of the relationship were scandalous…even by Hollywood standards.

When Spelling and McDermott first met, both were already married to other people. The couple started an affair that would lead to them both divorcing their current spouses. Spelling said when she first met McDermott, she knew she had met her soulmate.

The Spelling and McDermott union sent the tabloids into a feeding frenzy referring to Spelling as a home wrecker among other unpleasant names.

Fans looking for a book about Beverly Hills 90210 will be disappointed because she doesn’t spend much time on the subject. But then the book is the biography of Tori Spelling, not Donna Martin, her 90210 character. I read the book from cover to cover in two days.

I chose to write this review because many of us struggle to find true love which is a harsh reality for most. This book was a combination of a feel good story and a love story…it also shows that even celebrities struggle to find true love.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it. Spelling’s story describes the journey of a lonely sheltered girl who would learn that love is more compelling than money or personal gain.
