If a friend’s current fiancĂ©e came on to you, would you tell your friend? I
have read different opinions about this subject. As they say, there are two
sides to every story. One side is to tell while the other side is to say
nothing. I know you shouldn’t allow your friends to walk around looking like
fools, but I am more partial to the latter solution.
Many
years ago, my friend Steve was engaged to Andrea, the mother of his son.
Although I had known Andrea longer, they were both childhood friends. I was a
little surprised when they become a couple because she seemed more on the wild
side than Steve; but, it’s often said that opposites attract.
Steve
and Andrea discussed their marriage plans with me. Steve told me he had asked
his friend Doug to be his best man. I told Steve I agreed with his choice since
they were best friends.
I
assumed Steven and Andrea were solid…I was wrong.
I
got a knock on my door one evening. It was Doug. He had stopped by to ask for my
advice about something. He told me that
Andrea had showed up at his house alone the previous day.
She
told Doug that she loved Steve, but wanted to have a final sexual encounter
with someone else first.
Doug
was the guy she had chosen.
She
told Doug it would be a one-time fling, and no one would ever know.
He
declined because he didn’t want to betray his friendship with Steve.
Although
she was upset, she said she understood.
After
she left, Doug didn’t know whether or not to tell Steve. He asked me what I
would do.
After
careful thought, I told Doug that he should tell his friend. Little did I know,
my opinion ended their friendship.
Doug
told Steve about the incident. Steve said Doug must have misunderstood.
Steve
approached Andrea, who denied everything. She told Steve that Doug had invited her
over and then asked for sex. She had flipped everything and called Doug a liar.
Steve believed Andrea.
The friendship ended.
I
felt terrible for giving Doug bad advice. I should have told him to say
nothing.
Steve
eventually learned that Andrea wasn’t marriage material because they never
married.
He
must have learned that Andrea wasn’t so wonderful.
