One vote can win an election

With the presidential election coming up this year, many of us are still undecided about whether to vote for McCain or Obama. There will be thousands of Americans who won’t vote because they think their vote won’t mean anything. There is a Kevin Costner movie titled Swing Vote that addresses the importance of a vote.

Here is a true story about voting. A Tennessee woman was elected to a political position by a single swing vote.

In Sneedville, Tennessee, Angela Tuttle, won the elected position of constable of Hancock County, Tennessee by one write in vote…her own. Although no one else ran for the position, she only needed one vote to win.

Tuttle is a mother and a certified nursing assistant. After receiving encouragement from her father, she ran for the position. She will be sworn in on December 1st and her duties will include serving warrants and patrolling neighborhoods.

Her father is a longtime constable in another district and was re-elected. She says he will “show her the ropes.” Tuttle's father also told her she was the first woman ever elected constable in Hancock County, Tennessee.

So the next time you think your opinion or vote doesn’t matter, think about Angela Tuttle. One vote was all she needed to get elected.
