On
February 26, 2012, George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood sentry
killed a 17-year-old teenager named Trayvon Martin, who was returning home
after buying a drink and candy from a convenience store. Zimmerman
called authorities and said Martin was wearing a hood and acting “suspiciously.”
The 911 operator asked if he was following Martin. After Zimmerman told the
operator he was following Martin, the operator replied “We don’t need you to do
that.”
Zimmerman
ignored the order and then stepped out of
his vehicle and confronted Martin. Afterward, a struggle occurred, which left
Trayvon Martin dead.
