'John Wayne' Day rejected in California


Sorry pilgrims, it doesn’t look like California will approve a John “Duke” Wayne Day. Republican State Assembly member Matthew Harper of Huntington Beach proposed a holiday to celebrate the Duke’s birthday. But opponents like Mike Gipson, a Democratic Assembly member, who is black, voted against the idea 35-20. 

Naysayers called Wayne a racist and referred to a 1971 Playboy interview. In the interview, Wayne said, "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."
