Quality of life and your career

My employer laid off more than 300 people. One co-worker told me it was a relief to get laid off because she no longer had to wait for HR to contact her. She always dreamed about becoming an RN. Until she got laid off, she didn't give the nursing field much thought. After she received her termination letter, she immediately enrolled in nursing school. She graduated and is now an RN at a local hospital.

Life is short and we aren’t guaranteed anything. While here, why be miserable? For example, Cindy, another co-worker who was on the chopping block is an attorney. She graduated from law school and passed the Ohio Bar Exam. She must have gotten tired of constantly being asked why she stopped practicing law. Her response was, “because it didn't make me happy.”

Her father and siblings had also graduated from law school. She said her family expected her to attend law school. After passing the Bar Exam, she worked for a law firm and put in grueling 60-80 hour work weeks. She no longer had time for friends and family.

After a few years of existing, she decided to leave the legal field.
Have you ever wondered why someone would want to be a roofer or wash dishes for a living? Believe it or not, some people enjoy this work. They may not want to be responsible for a billion dollar corporation like Microsoft.

Not everyone is motivated by money or power; I know many people who don’t earn huge salaries, but enjoy living. If you are doing something you hate for a living, maybe it's time for you to do something else. Since you only have one life, it's best to enjoy it.
